I had the same issue/question so I found an alternative that's better for everyone.

You can put in a thank-you note in advance. Just add it as a private note towards the beginning of the article, before you submit. This works especially well if you know the editor's name. E.g.:

"Mary, thank you for taking the time to read my submission".

It shows up as a note to self, but editors see it, and they can (and do) reply.
